Kodak EasyShare DX7440 4MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom

Kodak makes good digital cameras for everyday use. It has a very stylish design. It has a 4x optical zoom lens from Schneider-Kreuznach Variogon. It has 4 MP, but don’t think that getting more is necessarily better. The camera’s ability to focus well and take sharp pictures in any condition is much more important.
The USB 2 port, AV and power connection are all on the left side, so you can keep your camera standing up. The Easyshare docking station, USB cable, AV cable, Li battery and charger are all included.
The viewfinder let’s you adjust the sharpness. It has built in 32 MB, and is compatible with CD and MMC cards. The LCD screen is above average – 2.2 inches, 153Kpixels. ISO modes range from 80 to 400. The ability to eliminate red eye works well. Pictures are JPEG only. It has 25 scene modes. Movies are Quicktime, MPEG4 compressed. The frame rate for 640 x 480 is 13, which almost makes it useless.
You can also take your camera to one of those Kodak Picture Kiosk and have them printed there. Very convenient. Overall, it’s a great first timer camera.

Kodak EasyShare DX4530 5MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom

This is a 5 MP camera with 3x optical zoom. The LCD size is 1.8 inches with antireflective coating.
Aperture range from 2.8 to 4.8. ISO is from 130 to 200, automatic. This is more limited than other cameras. Beware that this camera doesn’t handle low light situations very well, otherwise it produces great results.
White balancing is automatic. It has a date and time feature.
It can use standard AA Ni-MH batteries, or CRV3 Li, or Kodak’s easyshare Ni-MH rechargeable).
Only a CRV3 is included. Kodak says to not use alkaline at all because it can’t figure out the amount of charge left in the battery. The images are only JPEG. Unfortunately, Kodak hasn’t offered RAW format here. The movie mode is weak. Only 320 x 240 at 15 FPS. Kodak comes with it’s Easyshare software.
You can easily dock the camera and transfer files. It turns off the LCD in minute of no use to save power which can be annoying at times. This camera is designed to be easy to use, but it’s not strong on some features. The docking ability might be interesting to some.

Kodak EasyShare C300 3MP Digital Camera

The C300 is a 3.2 MP camera, equivalent to a 35mm camera. The price on this camera has come down significantly as it is yesterday’s model, but this can fulfill someone’s basic needs. There is no optical zoom. It’s all right to take snap shots at close range. Subjects should be a couple meters or a few feet away. It only has 5x digital zoom, but as you might know, this isn’t desirable. The LCD screen is rather small – only 1.5 inches, TFT. The aperture is fixed at 4.5. ISO is between 100 and 200, automatic only. It has auto flash and red eye elimination. Exposure control is automatic. It takes shots quickly, unlike some that require you to press the button for a second. Images are JPEG only. The movie mode offered is 320 x 240 at 15 FPS, which is good enough to be a webcamera. The movie format offered is Quicktime. Not sure what compression scheme it uses. It has built in 16 MB and is SD and MMC compatible like the newer Kodak models. It comes with a dock, digital (USB 2.0) connector, Kodak’s Easyshare software.
It is very lightweight – 147g. One of the lightest cameras out there.

HP Photosmart R717 6MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom

This is a 6MP camera from HP with a 3x optical zoom. The camera has built in ability to remove red eye which works out alright. This camera is unusual as it has a high digital zoom (8x), but digital zoom is not ideal. It works well with low light but it’s not at a professional level. It comes with a docking station. The camera recharges it’s Li batteries when docked. Some cameras allow you to preview photo’s on your TV using AV cable. This one needs the docking station to do this. You can also print onto certain HP printers by connecting to them directly. Most of this camera features are standard across many manufactureres. The LCD is 1.8 inch, 130Kpixels. ISO modes range from 50 to 400, Auto exposure and metering. The shutter speed can go longer than others: 16 seconds. The internal memory is 32 MB, which should allow from 15 to 25 photos at max resolution. It accepts SD and MMC cards. In burst mode, it can do up to 3 shots, which is below average. This camera is best for people who like the docking station and who have a HP printer that allows easy printing, otherwise other manufacturers offer more features.

Casio Exilim EXZ57 5MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom

The Z57 is a small step above the Z50 and Z55. This seems to have a oversize LCD screen. It’s 2.7 inches and bright. It’s not often that you see a 2.7 inch LCD on one of these. There is no normal viewfinder for this reason. Makes sense. The body looks great and it’s very thin. Remember that it’s all aluminum. The optical zoom is 3x. Casio says it can take up to 400 shots on a single charge. Again, an impressive number. It’s startup time is one of the fastest – only 1.6 seconds. It has a 7 point auto focus. The auto focus work pretty well and fast. ISO mode range from 50 to 400. This one also has a built in 9 MB. Seems as Casio likes this amount for some reason.
Images can only be exported as JPEG. Movies are AVI. The movie quality is very low – 320 x 240 at 15 FPS and audio. This is ok for a webcam. It comes with a cradle which can recharge it and used to transfer files to your PC. Overall, this camera is loaded with features. Casio has done a great job.

NIKON D70 Digital SLR Camera -- Body Only ( Lens Required )

This is a 6.1 MP prosumer camera for up to 3000 by 2000 pixels of resolution. Lens can be changed so professionals would probably be getting themselves a few series of lenses. Nikon’s main selling point is their lenses. It has a good performance. Fast startup, shutter speed lag is not exaggerated and feature rich. The LCD is 1.8 inches, 130 Kpixels, but they should have pushed this to 2.5. Supports JPEG and RAW (12 bit). There is no movie mode. ISO is from 200 to 1600. This is a matter of the CCD type. This uses USB 2, unlike the lower Nikon models.
The number of shots can range from 400 (heavy use) to 2000 (light use)
Keep in mind that it is effected by the lens system which consumes power while focusing.
The more the LCD is on, the more it drains.
This is compact flash and microdrive compatible. It supports memory cards with up to 2 GB capacity.
